log 5: value of time

the ultimate commodity

Falling back into my routine back in Boston after being free from it feels like a breath of fresh air. After a while of doing the same thing over and over again, it gets a little tedious. For me, it was the daily cycle of gym, code, and cook. While there were obviously other tasks that I did during the day, those were the main three that I held myself accountable to accomplish. After a short break, I can now appreciate how lucky I am to be able to have that routine. Going forward, all of the work I will be putting into my app and company will be self-paced. I have defined my short and long-term goals but when I consider how much time I have in a day, I have so much freedom. Feels great to be my own boss, waking up and choosing how to spend my time. And that’s the secret formula everyone has been looking for: time = freedom. One of the greatest lessons I learned from my Dad growing up is: time is the greatest commodity. You can’t buy or sell it, so you can either use it or waste it. Planning a routine, setting goals, and taking decisive steps to accomplish tasks are all ways I spend my time wisely. Now I don’t mean I have a minute-by-minute, action-packed calendar. I just have tasks I need to complete during the day or by the week. Those tasks also include fun things like long walks + fetch with my dog, minecraft Sunday with the siblings (today is the first day), and seeing friends. So in light of the return to the ultimate routine of gym, code, and cook. This is what I accomplished in the remainder of last week.

progress

The return to my gym back home has been nothing short of happiness. Being back in a place where I have all the equipment I need and all the set-ups I’m used to makes my training so much better. While it may be a tiny bit weird to miss a gym, everything feels so much better. A combination of lack of sleep and change in gym setting made training so much harder. Good training sessions get my mindset ready for thinking, which puts me at my next daily task, coding.

I didn’t actually get too much coding in last week. After learning more about Cloud Firestore and playing around with how things are being queried through the code I write, I had to add a few extra things to worry about. First, I learned that when you make a collection/document in the web version of Firestore it counts as one “write”. This means that entering it manually is the same thing as inputting data from an app which I thought was interesting. Second, I found out that you cannot rename collections or documents in Firestore so I had to plan a carefully laid out web of collections and documents. If I made one mistake or decided to change something in the future, I would either have to write a block of code to transfer the data or delete it and start again. So most of the work I did towards my app was creating the structure of my database for ease of querying. In this coming week, I’m going to work on getting my querying structure set up, work on some video ideas, and finally start making test videos for my database.
