Alex Chen

Rehabilitation and coaching technology, built with clinical credibility.

I'm a physical therapy clinician who builds software. Mistorchen LLC is where I turn clinical problems I meet in rotations into tools clinicians and patients can actually use — working at the intersection of hands-on care and engineering that Medical Engineering & Medical Physics (MEMP) programs are built around.

About

I'm currently in my Doctor of Physical Therapy clinical rotations, treating patients while building the technology I wish existed at the bedside. My work sits at the intersection of physical therapy and engineering: I understand the clinical workflow because I live it, and I build the software because the gaps are obvious once you've stood in the clinic.

That dual vantage point drives every tool I ship. A home-exercise builder is shaped by how clinicians actually document under time pressure. A documentation critique tool mirrors the feedback a DPT instructor gives. A biomechanics simulator grows out of markerless motion-capture research. The clinical training isn't a side interest — it's the design spec.

My trajectory runs from physical therapy into rehabilitation technology and toward a Harvard–MIT MEMP PhD, where medicine and engineering are meant to be practiced together rather than bolted on afterward. My research interests — biomechanics, markerless motion capture, and AI in rehabilitation — are already demonstrated work: I've co-authored a peer-reviewed study comparing OpenCap markerless motion capture against traditional lab-based motion capture in patients recovering from ACL reconstruction, and built Kinechain to visualize what those pose estimates imply about joint coupling and muscle-force relationships.

Tools

Free, live software offered by Mistorchen LLC. Each solves a problem encountered in the clinic.

Marmu Program Builder

Personalized training programs in minutes.

Building a structured, progressive training plan by hand is slow and easy to get wrong. Program Builder generates personalized programs for general fitness, running, triathlon, and soccer — exportable to PDF, syncable to your calendar (.ics), and paired with the Marmu app so a generated plan can carry into day-to-day training.

HEP Builder

Voice-driven home exercise programs.

Clinicians lose time assembling home-exercise programs during already-short visits. HEP Builder lets you build one by voice from a 257-exercise library — each with a YouTube demo — then export to PDF or email it straight to the patient.

SOAP Note Analyzer

AI feedback on your clinical documentation.

PT students rarely get structured feedback on their SOAP notes outside of scarce preceptor time. SOAP Note Analyzer critiques documentation in three modes — quick, educational, and comprehensive — the way a DPT instructor would.

Kinechain

Interactive musculoskeletal biomechanics.

A 3D + 2D biomechanics simulator visualizing joint coupling and muscle-force relationships across the shoulder, lower extremity, spine/trunk, and whole body — a hands-on companion to my motion-capture research. Forces in some 3D views are indicative estimates, not clinically validated measurements.

Research & ongoing work

My research centers on biomechanics and markerless motion capture — including peer-reviewed work validating markerless capture for clinical movement analysis, and the tools I build around those questions.

Related applied work: Kinechain (see Tools above) grew out of the same questions — it visualizes how markerless pose estimates like OpenCap's translate into joint-coupling and muscle-force relationships. It's an exploratory teaching tool, not a clinically validated instrument.

MISTORCHEN LLC

Mistorchen LLC is an early-stage company building coaching and rehabilitation software grounded in clinical practice — tools that meaningfully improve the lives of the people who need them most: a patient working through rehab, someone who can't afford a full-time coach, a clinician stretched too thin. Clinical credibility is the differentiator: every Mistorchen product is built by a Doctor of Physical Therapy student and CSCS. The tools above, and the products below, are all offered by Mistorchen LLC.

Marmu PT

Coaching platform for physical therapists and trainers.

Mistorchen's B2B platform for physical therapists and trainers to deliver coaching, programming, and home-exercise plans through the Marmu app — with no transaction fee on client billing. A live subscription product, available to coaches now.
