log 185: lessons
business
For my holiday break I’m back in Hawaii visiting my family. This time it’s different. In previous years my brother and I both lived in Boston so we would fly together. But for the first time in a few years, every family member is living in a different place. Being such a nomadic family has both its ups and downs. We all get to experience so many different things but we only get to see each other about once a year. When I landed in Hawaii my dad looked like a balloon ready to burst because of all the business advice and discussion he had prepared for the three of us. In the past few weeks I took some major steps to progress the development of Kynetik and my dad has prepared with lessons to help me become a better CEO. From the holiday season, the design of the new Kynetik has been extended from its original plan. Initially, we discussed the design to be completed by the end of December. However, the world basically stops during the final week of December so we are at a halt. This is where I need to be a “velvet hammer” as my dad calls it. I need to learn how to be stern, but also gentle. The expectation of completion already slipped once and it cannot happen again. This past week we met to discuss the design portion that has been completed and set a new expectation for the start of 2025. The team must stick to this expectation, and I have to enforce the expectations. The already completed work is amazing compared to what I had previously done myself. But we need to kick it up a notch so we start 2025 off strong.
